Manor Farm

Manor Farm, Hardington, Nr Frome

The Society owns and operates a 1,000-acre dairy farm in Hardington, located on the outskirts of Frome, Somerset. The farm houses a herd of approximately 900 animals, plus young livestock and Hereford bulls. Annually, the herd produces around 3.5 million litres of milk, supplying Co-operative stores across the UK. The farm harvests wheat and maize for animal feed.

Additionally, there is a man-made lake on the premises, holding 10,000 cubic litres of water sourced from an underground spring. This water is utilised in farm operations, minimising the use of metered mains water.

The farm

The farm boasts diverse wildlife, such as roe deer, badgers, occasional otters, and various birds of prey like barn owls, buzzards, and kestrels. The ancient woodlands provide a habitat for species like woodpeckers, rabbits, and hedgehogs.

Within the farm estate lies the 12th-century church of St Marys in the parish of Hemington. This Norman church has undergone several additions over the centuries, including a tower in the late 1400s, claimed to be one of England’s smallest complete church towers. Despite being declared redundant in 1971, the church was acquired by the Churches Conservation Trust. Tourists from around the globe visit the church to admire its box pews, pulpit, altar rails, and remnants of wall paintings.

Over the years, the church has hosted numerous carol services, creating a festive atmosphere with candlelight due to the absence of electricity.

We have a partnership with Velcourt Ltd, who manages our farm. We take great pride in our farm and are honoured to be the sole retail Co-operative Society with a fully operational dairy farm.
